Head CT in a Child for a Minor Head Injury


Head CT for minor head injury in child


Patients 0-18 years presenting to Emerg or the clinic with a minor head injury


If any or some of the following features are present:

  • Abnormal mental status
  • Signs of skull fracture
  • Scalp hematoma
  • Age less than 2 years
  • History of vomiting


Any positive features, consider ABI and CT imaging.

Inform parents that research has shown a 1:2000 – 1:5000 risk of mortality from solid tumors or leukemia in children who have a single pediatric head CT.
